Choosing the Right Drywall

Drywall type and thickness affect fire resistance, moisture tolerance, and soundproofing. Choose based on the room's purpose and building code requirements.

Regular Drywall: Standard white or ivory board used for most walls and ceilings in dry interior spaces. Available in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 5/8 inch thicknesses. 1/2 inch is standard for walls; 5/8 inch is recommended for ceilings to reduce sagging.

Moisture-Resistant (MR / Green Board): Treated with wax and water-repellent additives, typically with a green or blue paper facing. Used in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and basements. Not waterproof but significantly more moisture-tolerant than standard drywall.

Fire-Rated (Type X): 5/8 inch thick with glass fibers added to the core for enhanced fire resistance. Required by code for garage walls shared with living spaces, furnace rooms, and multi-family party walls. Provides 1-hour or more fire protection.

Soundproof / Acoustical Drywall: Denser, multi-layer boards designed to reduce sound transmission between rooms. Used for home theaters, bedrooms, shared walls in multi-family buildings, and music rooms. Often combined with acoustic sealant and insulation for maximum effect.

Drywall installation tips

  • Hang horizontally: On walls, hang sheets horizontally for fewer seams and stronger joints
  • Stagger joints: Offset vertical seams between rows for strength
  • Screw spacing: 6 inches on ceilings, 8 inches on walls
  • Tape joints: Use paper tape for strongest joints, mesh tape for patches
  • Three-coat process: Bedding coat, fill coat, and finish coat for smooth results

Add 10-15% for waste, cutouts, and mistakes. For ceilings, use 5/8-inch fire-rated drywall in attached garages.

Worked example

For example, for a 20×8 ft wall, using 4×8 ft sheets:

  1. Wall area = 20 × 8 = 160 sq ft
  2. Sheet area = 4 × 8 = 32 sq ft
  3. Sheets needed = 160 ÷ 32 = 5 sheets
  4. Tape = (20 × 12) ÷ 12 × 8 = 160 ft of tape
  5. Joint compound = 5 × 0.5 = 2.5 → 3 buckets of compound
