Choosing the Right Plaster Type

Plaster type affects drying time, workability, and the final finish. The right choice depends on the base surface, location (interior vs exterior), and desired texture.

Gypsum Plaster: The most common interior plaster. Made from calcined gypsum, it sets quickly and produces a smooth, white finish. Ideal for interior walls and ceilings over drywall, masonry, or lath. Easy to apply and sand.

Lime Plaster: A traditional, breathable plaster made from lime putty and sand. Allows moisture to evaporate through the wall, making it ideal for historic buildings, stone walls, and damp interiors. Takes longer to cure but is very durable and naturally antimicrobial.

Cement Plaster (Stucco): A durable exterior plaster made from Portland cement, sand, and water. Applied in multiple coats over metal lath or masonry. Resists weather, fire, and impact. Can be textured, colored, or painted for exterior finishes.

Veneer Plaster: A thin coat (1/16 to 3/32 inch) of gypsum plaster applied over specialized gypsum base boards. Dries much faster than traditional plaster and requires less material. Used for high-end interior finishes where speed and smoothness are priorities.

How to measure for plaster

Measure wall and ceiling areas in square feet by multiplying length × height for each surface. Subtract areas you won't plaster, such as windows, doors, and built-in cabinets. For irregular rooms, measure each wall separately and add them together. Multiply the total area by the number of coats — most projects need 2-3 coats for proper coverage and durability.

  • Walls: measure height × length for each wall, subtract door and window openings
  • Ceilings: measure length × width; add 10% for irregular shapes or angled ceilings
  • Corners and edges: plan for corner bead and tape — these don't add area but affect material estimates

Plaster application tips

  • Apply the scratch coat first on bare lath — score it with a scarifier while wet for the next coat to bond
  • Keep the workspace between 50-70°F; plaster sets too fast in heat and too slow in cold
  • Mix small batches — plaster has a 20-45 minute working time depending on the type
  • Wet the surface slightly before applying each new coat to prevent the previous layer from sucking moisture too fast
  • Use a darby or straightedge to level each coat; finish with a trowel for smooth results

Plaster vs. drywall

For example, for a 320 sq ft wall area, applying 2 coats:

  1. Total area to plaster = 320 × 2 = 640 sq ft
  2. A 50-lb bag covers roughly 50 sq ft per coat
  3. Bags needed = 640 ÷ 50 = 12.8 → 13 bags per coat
  4. For 2 coats: 26 bags total
  5. Buy a few extra bags for mixing adjustments and repairs
