Dumpster size guide

  • 10-yard dumpster: Small renovation, 2-3 tons limit
  • 20-yard dumpster: Medium remodel, 3-4 tons limit
  • 30-yard dumpster: Large renovation, 4-5 tons limit
  • 40-yard dumpster: Major construction, 5-6 tons limit

Weight limits vary by provider. Heavy materials like concrete, brick, and dirt may reach weight limits before the dumpster is full.

Worked example

For example, for a 6×4×3 ft pile of debris from a bathroom renovation:

  1. Volume = 6 × 4 × 3 = 72 cu ft
  2. Cubic yards = 72 ÷ 27 = 2.67 yd³
  3. Recommended dumpster: 4-yard minimum (holds 4 yd³)
  4. Common debris: drywall, wood, tile, fixtures, and packaging
  5. Heavy materials like concrete may need a smaller dumpster

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it matters
Overfilling the dumpsterDebris should not extend above the rim — overloaded dumpsters may be refused for pickup
Putting prohibited items insideNo paint, chemicals, tires, batteries, or electronics in standard dumpsters
Underestimating debris volumeA small bathroom renovation can easily fill a 4-yard dumpster — size up if unsure
