How to build a boat launch ramp

Build a shore-to-dock access ramp that rises and falls with the water level — with a concrete landing, treated-lumber decking, and a pivoting connection. Budget about $500–$2,000 and 2–3 days.

Overview

This ramp connects your shore to a floating or fixed dock. The upper end rests on a concrete landing at the shore and pivots, while the lower end rides up and down with the water — supported by floats or resting on the dock. This guide covers a walking access ramp; launching a boat trailer is a different, much larger structure.

Before you dig: shoreline, wetland, and dock rules are strictly regulated in many areas. Contact your local permit office and water authority before buying materials. Some shorelines are off-limits or require engineered plans.

Step 1: Check permits and regulations

This is the most important step. Waterfront work often requires permits and is restricted in wetland buffers. Ask about setbacks, allowed materials, and whether your dock or ramp needs an engineered plan. Budget extra time for approval.

Step 2: Plan the slope and length

Measure the horizontal distance from the top of the shore to the dock. Design a comfortable slope of roughly 1 in of rise per foot of run — steeper ramps are harder to walk and need handrails. Longer ramps need mid-span support.

Step 3: Build the shore landing

Excavate a level area, compact a gravel base, and pour a concrete landing pad large enough for the ramp hinge and a safe step onto the ramp. Use the concrete calculator to estimate the number of bags for your pad.

Step 4: Frame the ramp stringers

Cut two or three pressure-treated 2x8 or 2x10 stringers to length and lay out cross-members every 16 in. Estimate total board feet with the lumber calculator, then assemble the frame flat on the ground.

Step 5: Deck the ramp

Screw treated decking boards across the stringers, leaving a small gap between boards for drainage. Use galvanized or stainless fasteners — saltwater corrodes regular steel quickly. If you need a compacted gravel approach on the shore, use the gravel calculator to size it.

Step 6: Attach the pivot and support

Hinge the upper end of the ramp to the concrete landing with heavy galvanized hardware. Support the lower end so it rises and falls with the water: attach sealed flotation barrels or foam under the free end, or let it rest on the dock with a smooth, reinforced contact point. Test the pivot before loading it.

Step 7: Add safety features

Add anti-slip strips or grip tape to the decking, and install rails or grab bars on steep or long ramps. Keep the walkway clear of hardware and sharp edges.

Cost and time

  • Materials: $500–$2,000 depending on length, landing size, and hardware.
  • Time: 2–3 days including excavation and concrete cure time.
  • Tools: circular saw, drill, level, digging tools, wheelbarrow.

Safety and permitting notes

  • Never skip the permit check — fines and removal orders are expensive.
  • Design for winter: remove or secure the ramp where ice and ice-out are a risk.
  • Use pressure-treated lumber rated for ground or fresh/saltwater contact where applicable.
  • If the ramp spans more than about 10–12 ft unsupported, get a structural review.
