How to build a dog house

Overview

This dog house uses a simple box-frame design: an elevated floor to keep it dry, three solid walls, a front wall with a door opening, and a sloped roof with shingles. It takes roughly 6 to 10 hours of build time.

Step 1: Measure your dog

Size the house to your dog, not the other way around. Dogs stay warmest in a house that fits — too big means more space to heat with their body. Use these measurements:

• Length: nose to base of tail, plus 4–6 in of clearance.
• Height: floor to top of head, plus 4–6 in of clearance.
• Door: about 75% of shoulder height, wide enough to turn around comfortably.

A medium dog (30–50 lb) typically needs a roughly 24 in wide by 30 in deep floor with a 14–16 in tall door.

Step 2: Cut the frame pieces

Cut your treated 2x4s and plywood to size. Estimate the total board feet with the lumber calculator before you head to the store — it includes waste so you buy enough for cuts and mistakes.

Step 3: Build the floor

Assemble a rectangle of 2x4s sized to your floor dimensions, screw down plywood sheathing, then flip it over so the plywood is on top. Use two longer 2x4s as skids underneath so the house sits off the ground and drains.

Step 4: Frame the walls and door

Build the three solid walls as frames with studs every 16 in, then screw them to the floor platform. Build the front wall with a door opening cut into the plywood, centered on the opening in the framing. Square everything with a level before fastening.

Step 5: Build the roof frame

Frame a simple single-slope (shed) roof pitched about 3 in of fall per foot so rain runs off. Screw plywood sheathing on top and cover with roofing felt before shingling.

Step 6: Add siding and finish

Install exterior siding over the walls for weather protection. Caulk seams, then seal all exterior surfaces with exterior-grade paint, stain, or sealant — the paint calculator tells you how much you need. Add a drip edge or small overhang so water stays off the door opening.

Step 7: Shingle the roof

Install shingles starting at the lower edge and working upward, staggering seams. Use the shingles calculator to estimate bundles for your roof area. A 4–5 ft wide dog house roof usually needs just one or two bundles.

• Use pressure-treated lumber for anything that touches the ground.
