How to measure for shingles
Roof area is measured in roofing squares — each square equals 100 sq ft. Measure the length and width of each roof plane from the ground or from the attic. Multiply length × width for each plane and add them together. Divide by 100 to get the number of squares. Add 10-15% for waste, starter strips, and ridge caps. For complex roofs with valleys, dormers, and hips, add 20% waste.
- Simple gable roof: measure two planes, add together, add 10% waste
- Hip roof: measure all four planes, add together, add 15% waste
- Roof with dormers: measure each dormer face separately, add 20% waste for cuts around valleys
Shingle types and grades

Roofing accessories
